Earlier this year, the Governor and Legislature included in the state budget a provision to freeze the expansion of Family Care to new counties and capped enrollment in existing Family Care Counties until the Department of Health Services (DHS) determined that the expansion is "cost-effective."
On December 28, 2011, Governor Walker announced his plans to lift the Family Care enrollment cap. The decision has come about due to DHS implementing many of the recommendations from a Legislative Audit Burea report on Family Care released earlier this year and recommendations obtained from the Family Care Town Hall Meetings held earlier this year. Swift Legislative approval is expected. The Legislature is scheduled to come in two weeks in January, February and March - therefore the earliest legislative approval can be obtained is in mid to late January.
Family Care is a state program that helps people who are functionally and financially eligible make decisions about the services they need and how those services will be provided. Although the Laureate Group is part of the provider network in both Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, our participation in the program is limited.
This is good news for older adults in the greater Milwaukee area. We applaud Governor Walker on this decision.
